An autonomous body, constituted under the BangIa Academy Ordinance 1978, Bangla Academy has the President of the republic as its Patron-in-Chief.

The President of the Academy is an eminent educationist nominated by the Patron-in-Chief for a term of two years. He presides over the annual general meeting of the Academy, but has no executive responsibilities.

There is a provision for electing a Vice-President, but has never been implemented.

Apart from the President and the Vice-President, there are patrons, fellows, life-members and members. Membership of the Academy is, according to the Ordinance, open to 'distinguished scholars and persons of high literary and scientific merit'.

There is an Executive Council of which the Director General of the Academy is the Chairman. Besides the Chairman, there are seventeen members, seven of them elected for a term of three years. Others include experts in the fields of science and technology, representatives of universities and the government and outstanding writers.

The Director General is the chief executive of the Academy. He is appointed by the government.
