An autonomous body, constituted under the BangIa Academy Ordinance 1978,
Bangla Academy has the President of the republic as its Patron-in-Chief.
The President of the Academy is an eminent educationist nominated by the
Patron-in-Chief for a term of two years. He presides over the annual general
meeting of the Academy, but has no executive responsibilities.
There is a provision for electing a Vice-President, but has never been implemented.
Apart from the President and the Vice-President, there are patrons, fellows,
life-members and members. Membership of the Academy is, according to the
Ordinance, open to 'distinguished scholars and persons of high literary
and scientific merit'.
There is an Executive Council of which the Director General of the Academy
is the Chairman. Besides the Chairman, there are seventeen members, seven
of them elected for a term of three years. Others include experts in the
fields of science and technology, representatives of universities and the
government and outstanding writers.
The Director General is the chief executive of the Academy. He is appointed
by the government.
